For most protective orders, there is no time limit needed by law within which you need to file a protective order. 

However, filing for a protective order after the occurrence of the offensive acts reveals the court that you are worried seriously. 

What kind of information or documents should you bring when applying for a protective order? 

Rest assured that identification would be the only documentation required to apply for a protective order. However, other documentation might be helpful, but you do not require it. Consider bringing any relevant police reports, medical reports, copies of harassing texts or emails, photographs, or any other evidence that you may think could be helpful in acquiring a protective order.
